Fried Green Plantains

(Bunun Frites or Bunun Peze)

Ingredients:

  • 4 green plantains or semi sweet green-yellow plantains

  • 1 cup vegetable oil for frying

  • Salt

Instructions:

  1. Peel the plantains and cut them into 1-inch thick slices.

  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  3. Add the plantain slices to the skillet and fry for 3 minutes, or until somewhat soft.

  4. Remove the plantains from the skillet and place them on paper towels.

  5. Take a press and flatten the plantains until they are about 1/4 of an inch thick. If you don’t have a press you can put saran wrap or foik on the counters and use a plate or flat pan to flatten

  6. Return to the oil and fry for 3-5 minutes or until golden and crispy

  7. Sprinkle with salt to taste.

  8. Serve and enjoy!

Here are some suggestions for serving your fried green plantains:

  • Fried plantains are delicious on their own, but you can also serve them with Pikay Fire Slaw or your favorite dipping sauce, such as guacamole, salsa, or sour cream.

  • As a side dish with your favorite main course, such as grilled fish, chicken, or steak.
